Living in a small town can be just fine for some people. Others may find it stifling. For Mike Wilson, the lure of a jet-setting life in a big city has always been strong. So, it surprises no one when he leaves home after college to chase a dream of an important job, big money, and fancy car. For six years, it seems Mike has it all, especially when he is considered for a big promotion. But when Mike learns his hometown of Abington, Pennsylvania has been severely damaged by a fire on Christmas Eve, he puts his career on hold to move back to help.
Upon returning home, Mike realizes the damage is worse than he imagined. The town’s spirit has been crushed. Survivors, having lost loved ones, hold no interest in rebuilding. Many move away to escape the nightmares, while those who stay deal with the stark reminder of the carnage.
Even with all his education and status, Mike has never felt more ill-equipped to take on the challenge. It seems an impossible task, one that might cost him his career. But if Mike ever thought a big important job was the key to happiness, helping rebuild a small town from ashes to its former glory may be the most rewarding job he ever takes on.
