Robert Fox wrote ANTARCTICA AND THE SOUTH ATLANTIC after travelling in the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic early in 1984. His research involved spending several weeks in Antarctica aboard HMS Endurance, the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship, which supplies British bases, helps scientists of the British Antarctic Survey, maps uncharted waters and shows the flag. Here was an opportunity to experience the haunting beauty and myriad wildlife of one of the most extreme climates of the world and to visit South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, the South Orkneys, the Graham Land Peninsula and Antarctica itself - areas first explored by men like Cook, Scott and Shackleton.
