This book surveys the development of Bristol from the mid nineteenth century to the time of the First World War. During this period, Bristol underwent a comprehensive modernisation. Much of the old centre was swept away for Victorian improvements ans shown here are some buildings demolished as early as the 1850s. The city also developed new suburbs and this selection of photographs highlights the huge social differences between the industrial districts and the fashionable parts of the city.
