The manuscript of the charter book of the monastery of Mont-Saint-Michel (Bibliothèque municipal d'Avranches, 210) is well known on account of its beautiful illustrations, as well as for the importance of the collection for the study of the early dukes of Normandy and monastic land-holding in northern France in the eleventh century. Now for the first time the text of the original cartulary is edited here in full (119 charters), together with appendices of eleven related texts from other manuscripts. A 62-page detailed introduction examines both the cartulary and the related Mont texts, and shows how the monks rewrote the history of their abbey in the eleventh century in a version unquestionably followed by historians ever since. Full bibliography and a 46-page comprehensive index.
